U.S. condemns killing of Burundi’s opposition leader, urges peace


The U.S. on Tuesday strongly condemned the killing of the leader of Burundi’s opposition party, Union for Peace and Development (UPD), Mr Zedi Feruzi, and his bodyguard in Burundi that happened on May 23.

Feruzi and his bodyguard were reportedly shot dead in Bujumbura.

Houston submerged as wild weather kills 20 in US, Mexico




Torrential rain left large parts of Houston submerged Tuesday and trapped fans at an NBA basketball game, in savage weather that has killed nearly 20 people in the United States and Mexico.

The southern US states of Texas and Oklahoma, and northern Mexico, have borne the brunt of several days of wild weather, including tornadoes, which have left scores dead, missing and injured on both sides of the border.

More than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of heavy rain fell in just a few hours in the Texas city of Houston, triggering the worst flooding there in at least a decade and stranding at an arena a Houston Rockets player and spectators who had gone to see the basketball team Monday night.

Kenya: Gunmen kill police officers in new border raids


At least one police officer was killed and another is feared dead after a rescue party was ambushed by suspected  Al-Shabaab terrorist in Garissa County on Monday.

The officers, 59 in total, were responding to a distress call by a police patrol team, whose vehicle had run over a landmine.

Independent sources said two officers, one from the Administration Police and the other from the regular police, were killed.

India heatwave kill more than 1,000


 The death toll in the heatwave sweeping India has passed 1,000, with temperatures nearing 50C (122F) in some areas.
Most deaths have taken place in the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, where at least 1,118 people have died since last week.
Reports say at least 24 people have died from the heat in West Bengal and Orissa.

A Nigerian, Asisat Oshoala wins BBC Women's Footballer of the Year award

Nigeria and Liverpool forward Asisat Oshoala has been named as the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year.
The 20-year-old forward is the first player to win the new award from the BBC World Service, voted for by football fans around the world.
She beat Spain's Veronica Boquete, German Nadine Kessler, Scot Kim Little and Brazilian Marta to the honour.

Nigeria: NDLEA Not Leaving Kashamu’s Residence Despite Court Order



The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA have decided to ingnore court order and  has said that they would not leave the house of Mr Kashamu a senator-elect and a prominent member of PDP.

 According to NDLEA, they only got to hear about the court order in the news today and it might not be true. 

The agency spokesperson in a press statement also said it is hard to believe that a court of law will prevent a government agency from performing its responsibilities.

But according to earlier reports, a Federal High court today had issued a ruling ordering NDLEA operatives who had laid a siege on Mr. Kashamu’s home in Lagos since Saturday to vacate.

Ghana: Opposition leader’s brother charged over acid attack


Wickedness of the highest order: The younger brother of a leading figure in Ghana’s main opposition party appeared in court on Tuesday charged with the murder of a politician Adams Mahama, who died after an acid attack that shocked the nation.

Gregory Afoko, whose elder brother Paul is national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pleaded not guilty before magistrates in the capital Accra.

He and a fellow defendant, identified as Asabke Aladi and said to be still at large, “planned the murder of the late Upper East (region) chairman of the NPP (Adam Mahama)”, the charge sheet read.

BB King's death to be investigated as murder

A murder investigation has been launched into the death of  BB King after two of his daughters claimed he was poisoned.
Karen Williams and Patty King said the musician was given "foreign substances to induce his premature death" by his business manager Laverne Toney.
Lawyers for King's estate said the claims are unfounded and disrespectful.
But the possibility of homicide will now be investigated by the coroner and police in Nevada.

The police in Italy has  arrested a catholic priest along with 3 others  accused of pedophilia in an  operation, which was coordinated by the Milan prosecutor's office.

  The  49 year old catholic priest was arrested in Alassio, in the province of Savona, and was  charged with aggravated child pornography.

Nigeria: Power distribution historically pathetic, down to 727MW


The Nigeria electricity out put has gotten worse and has crashed to an all time  historical low of 727 megawatts.

When on Friday, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Power said the output had plumetted to 1,327 MW, Nigerians thought they had reached the nadir.

 But now things have gotten even worse.According to The Nation newspaper, the collapse at the Shiroro Power Plant was the cause of the latest generation plunge. Shiroro is a 600MW hydro electric plant on River Kaduna in Shiroro, Niger State.

Nigeria: Police arrest 6 suspects over stabbing of 2 pupils,kidnap and rape of an eight-year-old girl and a baby thief in Kano


The police in Kano State have arrested six suspects in connection with the stabbing of two pupils of Fagge Special Primary school in Kano on Wednesday.
ASP Magaji Majiya, the Police Public Relations Officer disclosed this in Kano on Monday while briefing newsmen on its activities.
Majiya said the suspects were apprehended last week following a tip-off, adding that they were now assisting the police in its investigation.

Xenophobia: NANS warns President Zuma to steer clear Nigeria on May 29


The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, angered by the manner which recent xenophobic attack was handled by the South Africa government, has advised President Jacob Zuma of South Africa to stay away from the inauguration of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.
This was as the students threatened  to invade the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, should Zuma step into the country’s airport.
They held that Zuma should stay away as his visit will be an insult to the sensibility of Nigerians over his alleged poor handling of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other migrant foreigners in his country.

Nigeria: 100 killed in Benue communities, refugee camps


Fulani herdsmen seems to be at it again, as no fewer than  100 persons, mostly women, children and the elderly, were feared killed early Sunday morning in villages and refugee camps located at Ukura, Gafa, Per and Tse-Gusa in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, in one of the bloodiest attacks on Benue communities.

The areas, which until the latest onslaught, hosted most refugees from previous attacks by the herdsmen, is where the home town of Governor Gabriel Suswam is located.
