Plane passengers got best view of eclipse

Lucky passengers aboard easyJet flights to Iceland today were given perhaps the best view of the eclipse as pilots took detours to allow them to capture the extraordinary event.

And there was no need to worry about clouds blocking the view as the planes appeared to linger around the archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean as the first solar eclipse of the century took place.

Meanwhile millions of people who turned out to catch a glimpse of the spectacle on the ground were left gazing at the sky in frustration after grey skies and a shortage of glasses left many disappointed.
