Kenya: Journalist in court for writing how county commissioner cried

Kajiado county commissioner Harsama Kello has used the CID to take The Star reporter Kurgat Marindany to court over alleged defamation.

In the court summons handed to Marindany by Kajiado CID officers, Kello alleges the reporter published a defamatory story.

He says Marindany, who is required to appear in court on Thursday, defamed him by reporting that he cried, when called land grabber.

Kello has sought court action over the story the Star published on April 2, headlined ‘Nkedianye land rebuke leaves official in tears’.

He cried in public for 20 minutes on March 31 when Governor David Nkedianye called him a "land grabber".

The commissioner denied that he cried, saying he had been looking down, reading a newspaper.

He said he did not want to look at the governor as he "tongue-lashed" him in public. The two attended the launch of the Kajiado County Land Policy at Maasai Technical Training Institute in Kajiado town.

Kello provoked Nkedianye by accusing him of violating the law when he banned land transactions.

He had given the governor a piece of his mind on handling land matters without violating the law.
