Four Nigerians jailed in New Zealand for Drug trafficking

Four Nigerians -  Nnamdi Augustine Iwu 36, Hyacinth Ochibulu 44, David Obiaga 44 and Ugochukwu Okpara 27, were yesterday June 18th sentenced by a High court in New Zealand to 15 to 18 years jail terms after being found guilty of importing and possessing methamphetamine, a banned substance, in New Zealand.

A police statement said the sentences handed down at the Auckland High Court on Thursday marked a successful end to a combined police and customs operation that began in November 2013.

Operation Gatsby was launched after Customs officers discovered methamphetamine with a street value of 1.04 million dollars in the luggage of an Auckland man who had just returned from Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

The Nigerians and  the New Zealander who was sentenced to 9 years in prison are said to be part of an international drug smuggling ring syndicate.
