A white police officer, Jason Van Dyke, 37who shot a black teenager 16 times in Chicago has been charged with first-degree murder. The death of Laquan McDonald, 17, in October last year has added fuel to the continuing debate in the United States about the way police deal with black suspects.
City officials, police and community leaders appealed for calm as dashboard-camera footage was released showing the moment the young man was killed. The video was taken via the dashboard camera of an officer responding to the scene the night of Oct. 20, 2014
The six-minute 54-second video shows the teenager, who was later revealed to be high on the hallucinogenic drug PCP, walking down a street holding a knife.
Laquan is seen walking down the middle of the street, not posing a threat, while two officers can be seen with their service weapons drawn on the teen. As the car parks, the camera stabilizes on Laquan, who is seen briefly walking away from officers before being hit with a barrage of bullets. Even though he was taken down by the initial shots, Jason shot him a total of 16 times, even when he was already lying on the ground!
