Miley is a strong supporter for the LGBTQ community and was honoured at amfAR, a leading organization dedicated to the support of HIV/AIDS research.
Introducing her date on Twitter, Miley wrote: 'Meet Tyler (@tywrent), a 24 year old living in New York City, and my date for @amfar tonight!!!'
'Tyler is a queer, biracial, agender person, whose pronouns are they/them/theirs.'
She added: 'Tyler shares about their identity, experiences and hopes saying: "My whole life, I was led to believe that there were only two genders."
