Cholera outbreak, Death Toll Rises to 39 In South Sudan

Cholera in war-torn South Sudan has spread to another state, with at least 39 dead since an outbreak was declared last month, the World Heath Organization said Tuesday.

According to WHO figures, a  total of 1,212 cholera cases including 39 deaths have been recorded, with the highly contagious infection spreading from the capital Juba in Central Equatoria to neighbouring Jonglei state, one of the worst-affected areas by the 19-month civil war.

South Sudan’s health ministry officially declared an outbreak of the diarrhoeal disease on June 23, although the first case was tracked back to a UN camp in the capital Juba on May 18.

According to South Sudan Ministry of Health, no fewer than 18 people have died of Cholera in the country’s Central Equatoria State.

South Sudanese Health Minister, Riek Gai Kok, said that over 171 cholera cases have been confirmed, declaring an outbreak of the highly contagious infection.

Horror in South Sudan As Children Were Raped, Castrated, Thrown Into Fire

According to United Nations, warring forces in South Sudan have carried out horrific crimes against children, including castration, rape and tying them together before slitting their throats.

“Survivors report that boys have been castrated and left to bleed to death, girls as young as eight have been gang raped and murdered,” UN children’s agency chief Anthony Lake said in a statement released earlier this week.

South Sudan. Rebels ask oil firms to leave

South Sudan’s rebels want oil firms still operating in the country to shut down as “a matter of urgency” due to violence.

On Tuesday evening, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in opposition and allied groups under former Vice President Riek Machar said the firms should leave the Upper Nile region immediately.

South Sudan rebels in major assault on key town

Rebels in South Sudan have launched a large-scale attack on the strategic northern town of Malakal, an official and aid sources said Saturday.

Fierce fighting was reported to be raging inside the town, situated in the country's oil-rich north, in what appeared to be a major counter-attack against a several weeks-old offensive by government troops.
