A report by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)  on Thursday revealed that 

Nigeria is home to the largest number of child marriages in Africa. Although, Mauritania, Niger, Chad and the Central African Republic rank among countries where under-age marriages thrive in Africa Nigeria, with 23 million, is home to the largest number of child brides.

Burundi: Rights Activist’s Son, Welly Nzitonda, Killed For Opposing President Nkurunziza

The son of a leading Burundian rights activist was found dead Friday hours after he was  arrested  in the capital Bujumbura, his family and witnesses said.The body of Welly Nzitonda, son of Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa an activist who publicly opposed President Pierre Nkurunziza’s controversial bid  for a third term, and who was wounded in a shooting in August was found on the street of the capital on Friday, witnesses said.Mbonimpa, who is in exile in Europe, confirmed his son’s death.

Plane Crashes In Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula With 224 People On Board

A Russian passenger plane has crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The Kogalymavia Airbus A-321 was travelling from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg.There were 217 passengers and seven crew on board the flight.Egyptian search and rescue teams have located the aircraft and say they have heard ‘pained’ voices from inside the wreckage.

Rescuers Search For 35 Missing Migrants After Boat Wreck

Four bodies have been found as rescuers in southern Spain are search for 35 missing migrants  after their boat broke up on its way from Morocco.The unseaworthy, overcrowded boat set off from Alhucemas. Fifteen migrants were rescued alive.

22 Migrant Drown Off Greek Islands

At least 22 migrants - many of them children - have drowned trying to reach Kalymnos and Rhodes from Turkey, in the second major boat tragedy off Greek islands this week.According to Greek officials, 19 people died and 138 were rescued near Kalymnos.Three others died off Rhodes and three were missing. Six were rescued there.

781 migrants and refugees rescued off the coast of Libya over the weekend have arrived in Cagliari in Sardinia the Italian Coast Guard said.The people were rescued in six different operations coordinated by the Italian navy.Eight people died while trying to cross the Mediterranean on Saturday and Sunday.

2,000 People Displaced As Flood Devastates Three Communities In Rivers

2,000 people have been displaced from Jankroma, Akinima and Obie, communities in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State due to flooding after a heavy rain on Saturday.

It was gathered that apart from the heavy rainfall, the release of water in phases from the Ladong Dam in Cameroon had forced an overflow of the Orashi River, a development that had rendered thousands homeless within the past three days.

A Hungarian camerawoman who was filmed while she deliberately tripped up a Syrian refugee carrying a child as they ran away from police near the Serbian border has been fired.Petra Laszlo, working for local TV station N1TV, which is run by the anti-immigration far-Right Jobbik party, was caught on camera kicking refugees, including a young girl, who were fleeing a camp.Another cameraman captured the moment Ms Laszlo films the refugees running away from charging police officers at the border village of Roszke before sticking her leg out as a father carrying his son runs past, causing them both to fall to the ground.

One Million Migrants Should Reach Europe By 2016 - UN

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says around one million migrants should reach Europe by the end of 2016 and according to the United Nations, Europe must offer guaranteed relocation for Syrian refugees.Some 30,000 refugees and migrants are on Greek islands now..including 20,000 on Lesbos.Record numbers are crossing from Greece into the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia from where many people board trains heading for Serbia.

Flood Dislodges Households In Jigawa State

Alhaji Ado Musa, the Village Head of Warwade, on Saturday said that floods had dislodged 12 residential houses in his community in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa.

He said that the menace was as a result of downpour and subsequent flooding recorded in the area in the last few days.

He added  that the houses destroyed were in Bunku village, adding that the place had been a flood-prone area for some time due to its closeness to the Warwade Dam.

The village head recalled how flooding had destroyed more than 50 houses in 2012 in the same area.

Musa, however, blamed the victims for not developing and relocating to the plots of land distributed to them by Dutse Local Government Area.

Germany Welcome First Trainload Of Syrian Migrants

The first of thousands of mainly Syrian nationals who were stranded in Hungary before being allowed to leave on buses for Austria have arravied in the German city of Munich.

Austria: Arrests Made Over 71 Dead Refugees In A Trailer

Austria has confirmed that the lorry found abandoned near the Hungarian border on Thursday contained the bodies of 71 people who are  thought to have been refugees from Syria.The vast majority, nearly 60, were men. There were also eight women and four children including a baby girl.The authorities believe they suffocated.
