Human rights activists and members of Sadhbhav Manch, an inter-faith dialogue group, have alleged police atrocities against a group of Christians, who had come to the city to “carry out publicity for their faith.
”In a memorandum to the Jaipur Police Commissioner, the activists said 20 members from the Hebron Church of Hyderabad were picked up by the Mansarovar police on Wednesday and beaten up in custody, with six sustaining serious injuries.“
The action was carried out at the behest of the Hindutva forces, which hurled abuse [at the Christians] and barged into the house at Shanti Nagar, where they were staying,” the memorandum said.
It charged that instead of acting against those who broke the law, the police pushed the Christians into two jeeps and kicked them before taking them to the police station.At the station, ASI Daya Ram and another ASI allegedly subjected them to third-degree torture.
“ACP Sodala and the SHO arrived only after rights workers reached there and spoke to the SP about the illegal detention and custodial torture,” the memorandum said. As they were filing the complaint, the police station was filled with RSS and other Hindutva group workers.
The memorandum said the men were asked to leave for Hyderabad immediately or face charges of conversion.The Sadhbhav Manch has demanded action against those responsible for threatening the group to leave the city at midnight.
