Kenya: Rapist Pastor Denied Bail

A pastor in Kawangware, Kenya accused of raping his neighbour’s two-year-old daughter was yesterday denied bail by a Nairobi court.

The alleged rapist, John Mumbai faces charges of defiling the child on March 27 in Kawangware.

He  denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Joseph Karanja.

He tried to defend himself by saying he was in church at the time of the crime since he is a pastor.

Mumbai pleaded with the court to give him a reasonable bail since he is the sole breadwinner for his wife and children.

However, Karanja rejected the bail application. He said Mumbai might interfere with potential witnesses as he is a neighbour to the complainant.

The magistrate said the investigating officer needs more time. Mumbai will be in custody until Monday, when his case will be mentioned for further directions.
