Kenya: How two Inmates slit another's throat in Naivasha prison

Two inmates serving life sentences in Naivasha Prison yesterday attacked another prisoner, suffocated him and slit his throat.

The two then handed  themselves over to prison authorities who later discovered the bloodied and lifeless body.

The motive of the murder was not clear, but sources said the two were venting their anger after they failed to get a transfer to Kisumu prison.

Security was beefed up as CID officers visited the scene, while the suspects were locked up. A prisons officer who declined to be named said the three were among inmates in the remand block, when the incident occurred.

“They attacked the victim using blankets and a sharp object,” the source said. The officer in charge of the prison Patrick Mwenda said the slain inmate was serving 10 years for indecent assault.

He termed the murder “beastly”. Mwenda declined to release the name of the victim until relatives are notified.

Mwenda said that the incident will not deter the Prisons Department from reforming inmates. A senior police officer said they are investigating the killing.
