 Frenchman Jean-Philippe Rémy, 49, who is Africa correspondent for Le Monde, was working with 34-year-old Philip Edward Moore, a British freelance photographer who works regularly for AFP,when they were arrested "while carrying out their mission to inform".

Burundi: Rights Activist’s Son, Welly Nzitonda, Killed For Opposing President Nkurunziza

The son of a leading Burundian rights activist was found dead Friday hours after he was  arrested  in the capital Bujumbura, his family and witnesses said.The body of Welly Nzitonda, son of Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa an activist who publicly opposed President Pierre Nkurunziza’s controversial bid  for a third term, and who was wounded in a shooting in August was found on the street of the capital on Friday, witnesses said.Mbonimpa, who is in exile in Europe, confirmed his son’s death.

Two killed in Burundi pre - election violence

A Presidential official has confirmed that one policeman and a civilian were killed in an  overnight violence before Burundi's presidential vote on Tuesday, after blasts and gunfire echoed around the capital.

Electoral clashes six killed in Burundi capital

Six people, including one policeman, were killed in a clash btween police and residents in Burundi's capital on Wednesday, witnesses and a police spokesman said.

The incident occurred  in the Cibitoke neighbourhood, in the outskirts of the capital Bujumbura. 

 Burundi has been locked in its worst political crisis since its civil war ended a decade ago, with protests erupting in late April against President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid to seek a third term in office. Dozens have been killed.

The U.S. on Tuesday strongly condemned the killing of the leader of Burundi’s opposition party, Union for Peace and Development (UPD), Mr Zedi Feruzi, and his bodyguard in Burundi that happened on May 23.

Feruzi and his bodyguard were reportedly shot dead in Bujumbura.

Update: Burundian security forces fired shots and tear gas in battles with protesters Wednesday, the latest violence in weeks of anti-government demonstrations, as the presidency delayed elections by over a week.

In the capital Bujumbura, thousands defied heavy gunfire from police and government orders to call off their protests, marching through the streets to demand President Pierre Nkurunziza abandon his bid for a third term in power.

Chaos in Burundi continues. Following the break out of violence after the foiled coup attempt in Burundi, Doctors have said policemen invaded a hospital in the country’s capital, killing patients and searched for men inured in the coup crisis.

 A surgeon at the Bumerec hospital in Bujumbura, Dr. Antoine, said the attack on Friday, May 15 also inflicted different degrees of injury on some patients.

Burundi: Prominent independent radio boss flees country - activist

The head of the prominent Burundian independent radio station RPA has fled the central African country amid a crackdown by security forces loyal to President Pierre Nkurunziza,  a human rights activist said Saturday.

African Public Radio (RPA) boss Bob Rugurika was subject to threats of jail and even death following thefailed  coup attempt against President Nkurunziza and "has had to seek shelter in another country," said Innocent Muhozi, head of the Burundian Press Observatory.

Two RPA journalists confirmed to AFP that Rugurika had fled.

Muhozi said a campaign of intimidation and repression was underway in the country.

Burundi coup leader General Godefroid Niyombare on the run

The ring leader of the coup attempt in Burundi, General Godefroid Niyombare, is on the run after escaping capture by troops loyal to the central African nation's president, a senior police official told AFP Friday.

"General Niyombare has evaded us but we know where he is hiding," the official said, adding he was believed to have fled to a southern district of the capital Bujumbura.

Niyombare had earlier Friday told AFP by telephone he was surrendering and that loyalist troops were closing in on him.

Coup leaders in Burundi claimed Thursday to have taken over most part of the county's  capital Bujumbura, a day after a top army general said he had deposed President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Heavy fighting between rival Burundian troops erupted in the capital on Thursday, the day after a top general launched a coup to oust the central African nation's President Pierre Nkurunziza.

#BurundiCrisis: President Nkurunziza's return 'thwarted'

Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza's attempt to return home to tackle a coup has failed and he has returned to Tanzania where he was attending a summit. 

A source said the plane turned back after 10 minutes as it would have been unable to land safely in Burundi.

The coup announced by Maj Gen Godefroid Niyombare had brought thousands on to the streets to celebrate.

But its outcome remains unclear and the presidency insisted it had failed.

Reports say they used tear gas and live ammunition on some several hundred protesters in the centre of Bujumbura, Burundi's capital.

East African heads of State will meet in Dar es Salaam next week, on May 13, over the political crisis in Burundi, Tanzania’s foreign minister announced.

Mr Bernard Membe and his counterparts, Louise Mushikiwabo (Rwanda) and Kenya’s Amina Mohamed, made the announcement while meeting politicians opposed to Mr Nkurunziza seeking a third term in office.

Uganda was represented by its ambassador to Burundi, Major-General Matayo Kyaligonza.
