Plane Crashes In Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula With 224 People On Board

Not Again! A Russian passenger plane has crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The Kogalymavia Airbus A-321 was travelling from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St Petersburg.There were 217 passengers and seven crew on board the flight.Egyptian search and rescue teams have located the aircraft and say they have heard ‘pained’ voices from inside the wreckage.

ISIL Claims To Have Killed Croatian Hostage In Egypt

Islamic State in Egypt claims to have killed Croatian hostage Tomislav Salopek (31) by publishing a photo which purports to show his decapitated body on jihadist Twitter accounts.An employee of a French company, Salopek was kidnapped on July 22 on a road 22km south-west of Cairo. On Friday the group threatened to kill the hostage within 48 hours if the Egyptian government failed to free Muslim women imprisoned in Egypt.

Egypt Celebrates Opening Of New Suez Canal

Thursday was declared a public holiday in Egypt, state television broadcast shots of the new Suez canal to the theme tune of US TV series Game of Thrones in an extravagant celebrations of the inauguration  of a  major extension of the Canal.The main waterway has been deepened and a 35km parallel channel opened to increase capacity to 97 boats per day.

Italy not 'intimidated' by Cairo consulate attack

Italy  foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has said that Italy will not be intimidated by the deadly bombing of its consulate in Cairo. 

A powerful explosion ripped through the Italian consulate in central Cairo early Saturday, partly damaging the building and killing one person.(Read here)

His Words:"Bombing against our consulate in Cairo, there are no Italian victims," Gentiloni tweeted shortly after the attack.

One dead as bomb blast hits Italian consulate in Cairo

 A huge explosion has  hit the Italian consulate in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday morning.At least one person is reported dead and several more injured.According to a security official in the Egyptian capital, a car bomb was to blame.

Egypt: Top prosecutor Hisham Barakat killed by car bomb in Cairo

An Egypt’s public prosecutor Hisham Barakat has died following a bomb attack on his car in Cairo.Security sources said the device was detonated remotely as a convoy of vehicles left his home on Monday morning.The explosion destroyed at least five cars and blew out shop windows.Several other people were injured including five police guards.

Morsi's death sentence confirmed by an Egyptian court

An Egyptian court on has  upheld the death sentence against ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi for plotting jailbreaks and attacks on police during the country’s 2011 uprising.

The same court also sentenced Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, to life in prison on charges of spying for the Palestinian Hamas movement, Lebanon’s Shiite Hezbollah and Iran.

Egypt: Hamas is not a terror outfit

An Egyptian court has overturned a decision naming Hamas a terrorist organisation on Saturday, a ruling coming after months of increasing hostility to the blockaded rulers of the Gaza Strip.

The Urgent Matters Appeals Court cited a lack of jurisdiction as the reason for annulling the earlier court’s ruling.

Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas spokesman in Gaza, welcomed the court’s ruling, saying it would have “positive consequences on the relationship between Hamas and Egypt”.

Egypt initially declared the group a terrorist organisation in February. That ruling further isolated Hamas, which once found open support under Egypt’s toppled Islamist President Mohamed Morsy. Egypt’s new government recently has begun clearing a buffer zone along its border with Gaza Strip in an attempt to destroy a cross-border network of tunnels that Hamas considers a lifeline.

Egypt court orders Mubarak retrial over killings

An Egyptian appeals court, has ordered the ousted Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, to stand trial all over again over the killing of protesters in 2011.

The former president was cleared in a retrial in November 2014 after he was initially jailed for life over the death of 800 people during the revolution.

Mubarak, 87, who is currently in the Maadi military hospital in Cairo, was separately convicted of corruption and sentenced to three years in jail earlier this year. 

Egypt: Former president Hosni Mubarak jailed in corruption retrial

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been sentenced to three years in jail on corruption charges after a retrial in the capital, Cairo.

His sons were given four years each in the same case which centres on the embezzlement of $14m (£9.3m) earmarked for renovation of presidential palaces.

The original conviction was overturned on 13 January over legal procedures.

Egypt's ousted President Morsi jailed for 20 years
