Kenya: Meet George Muchai assassination suspect

Police have been allowed to continue holding Simon Wambugu
Gichamba, a suspect in the killings of Kabete MP George Muchai, his driver and his two bodyguards.

The court allowed the police to hold Mr Gichamba 20, who appeared not to follow proceedings, for 14 more days so that “he may help in tracing his accomplices” and allow police to complete investigations before formally charging him with murder.

Prosecutor Robert Kyaa said the suspect is assisting police in tracing his accomplices, who are still at large. He was arrested on February 12 at Kangemi and for the purposes of ongoing investigations it is necessary that he remain detained in police custody for a period of 14 days,” the prosecutor said.Mr Gichamba, did not object to the prosecutor's request to continue detaining him but was surprised that he was being linked to a murder.“Am I being charged with murder?” he asked in Swahili, but the prosecutor reassured him that he was only being held for investigations pending a possible murder charge.

The prosecutor said there were compelling reasons to keep Mr Gichamba in custody to help “with investigations”.“The suspect is to be charged with murder. Investigations are not incomplete and police require more time,” Mr Kyaa said.He said the suspect was being investigated in connection with the killings of the politician, his driver Stephen Ituu Wambugu and the two bodyguards, Samwel Kimathi Kairika and Samwel Lakaley Matanta.

The suspect will return to court on February 27. In the meantime, he will be detained at the Central Police Station in Nairobi. On Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said police were in “hot pursuit” of the man’s accomplices. The suspect was arrested in Kiambu and was allegedly found in possession of mobile phones stolen in two carjacking events that happened hours before the killings.Investigators have been viewing CCTV footage from cameras installed on several buildings around the city as they try to unmask the killers.
