India: 18 arrested after rape suspect lynched

Khan's brother, Syed Jamal Khan, said he was innocent and accused police of trying to falsely implicated him of rape

Police officials in India yesterday charged 18 people after thousands reportedly stormed a prison and lynched a man accused of rape in the country’s northeast, as tensions remained high, a senior officer said. 

Officers arrested the men for rioting in the state of Nagaland, but it was unclear whether they were directly involved in killing Syed Farid Khan, whose body was then dumped in a forest.

 Indian mob broke into a prison where a suspected rapist Syed Faird Khan was being held to break him out for a public lynching. 

Khan was beaten to death and hung from a clock tower in Nagaland state after being put in a cell, he was accused of attacking a 19 year old student in February. 

It came after thousands were outraged by the blocking of a film about the highprofile gang rape of a student on a bus in the country in 2012.
