Kenya: Manhunt launched for police officer over Boda Boda woman's death

Police have launched a manhunt for the officer facing charges of manslaughter over the death of a woman in Mpeketoni, Lamu County, Kenya.

A team of detectives including officers from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) have been assigned the task of looking for the  police officer who  went into hiding on Monday last week following the death of Margaret Njeri at Pandya Memorial Hospital in Mombasa.

Lamu County Head of Criminal Investigations Prosper Bosire said the officer has not yet been arrested or traced.
He said the man had switched off his mobile phone and even changed his phone number, something that the DCI boss said had made the search even more complicated.

Mr Bosire, however, said they have put all measures in place to ensure the officer is arrested.
“The officer has not been arrested. We have incorporated a team of detectives including the NIS in the search for the man.

"Although his phone is off, we are following certain links and we believe we will have him arrested soon. Let us be patient. Once we arrest him we will let you know,” said Mr Bosire.
Meanwhile, the family of the late Margaret Njeri has asked the government to disclose the identity of the police officer.

Through the family lawyer George Wakahiu, the family asked for the name of the man, photographs and other important descriptions displayed as a wanted person so that the citizens can assist in his arrest.

Mr Wakahiu said it is difficult for the man to be traced since the public does not have any information that could assist in arresting him.

“The policeman has not been arrested since there is no warrant of arrest. We want the government to disclose the suspect’s identity and description. Let it be put in all public places so that we have him arrested by members of the public,” said Mr Wakahiu by phone.
