Chukwuma Soludo's Community Ravaged By Flood

The hometown of  former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, is under erosion threat.Major roads leading to the community, Isuofia, in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State have been cut off by gully. The community therefore petitioned the state government for intervention. The community is made up of six villages namely: Akulu, Okpoko, Ozala, Isiaku, Umueze and Ezioka.Residents of the agrarian community said the situation had subjected them to untold hardship. They said they were currently unable to transport and market their farm products outside their domain.A 76 year-old-man , Mr. Felix Ezeobiora, lamented that flood had wreaked havoc on his house for 10 years “in a manner worse than death”.

The Vice-Chairman of Akulu village, Chief Cletus Ezeogu, while recounting how the various roads in the were washed away, blamed the contractors handling Akulu-Nanka Road for the community’s ordeal. He alleged that the contractor abandoned the project.Ezeogu said the residents had cried to the Anambra State Government, all to no avail. He stated that for 25 years, inhabitants of the area had continuously dwelt under the fear of erosion. The President-General of Isuofia Peoples Union Federated, Chief Ogechukwu Onuorah, said the entire community might be submerged by erosion as the rain intensified if nothing was done to control the situation.

"We tried our best to avert the disaster through palliative works, but that is not enough to tackle the flood. Major roads leading to Okpoko village that connect three other villages have been cut-off completely,” Onuorsh said. The Traditional Ruler of the community Igwe Christopher Moughalu, said the erosion had overwhelmed his community. He called on the state government to come to their aid, saying that environment experts should be involved to combat the scourge.
