Boko Haram: Over 400 Schools In Borno Reopen After 18 Months

The United Nations said on Tuesday, that hundreds of schools in northeast Nigeria have reopened for the first time in a year and a half, though many teachers and pupils are reluctant to return because of persistent violence in the region. 

Almost 450 schools have reopened in Borno state since October, more than 18 months after education was halted in the wake of an attack by Boko Haram militants on a boarding school in neighbouring Yobe state in which they killed 59 students.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi NEARLY 1.5 million children do not go to school in Kenya. He said that of all the children who have never enrolled in or who have dropped out of school, 94 per cent are from the rural poor and the majority of them are girls.

Prof. Wole Soyinka Calls Obasanjo A Liar And An Economic Illiterate

Prof. Wole Soyinka, has said that he has no respect for Obasanjo, who he described as an indescribable liar.Soyinka carpeted the former president on Friday night when he was responding to questions during a programme tagged: ‘An evening with Wole Soyinka’, organised by Globacom.

Asked to respond to Obasanjo’s assessment of him in the former president’s book titled ‘My Watch’, where he notes that the Nobel laureate, is good at hunting and wines but a political illiterate, Soyinka said that he was hardly bothered because he believed that Obasanjo was a liar.

Here Is The List Of Illegal Universities In Nigeria As Declared By NUC

Recently, the National Universities Commission  released a list of illegal degree awarding institutions operating in Nigeria.The list of these illegal universities was made available to the public in a NUC’s weekly bulletin dated August 24.In the bulletin, the NUC Executive secretary, Julius Okojie, warned that Certificates obtained from these universities and colleges will not be recognized for the purpose of NYSC, employment and further studies.”

Wike Pays N712m For Stranded Rives State Students Abroad

Chief Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, has ordered the immediate payment of N512m to offset the debts owed by final year students of the state on overseas scholarship.

The state government had paid an initial N200m, being the sum the students were to pay earlier for their studies, bringing the amount to N712m.

WAEC To Withhold ’ Results In 19 States Over N4b Debt

The West Africa Examinations Council, WAEC has threatened to withhold the results of students in 19 states that sat for the May/June 2015 WASSCE over nonpayment of candidates’ registration fees by their state governments.

NSIWC orders Vice-Chancellor, Registrar of Otuoke university to refund over-bloated salaries

The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC has directed  the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, FUO, Bayelsa State, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko to refund over-payment of salaries running into millions of naira. 

This was as it also requested The varsity’s Registrar, David Suowari,  was also requested to refund cumulatively the sum of N130, 692.71 per month in excess of his due salary.

The commission reportedly learnt of the over payments during its visit to the institution on May 12, 2015 when thet were there to carry out an inspection of FUO’s remuneration practices vis-a-vis the extant government’s pay policy.

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka worried over Chibok girls

Nobel Laureate, Pro. Wole Soyinka has lamented the continued captivity of the missing Chibok girls.

The eminent playwright made the statement on Saturday, June 6, 2015, while giving a speech titled “Faith, Science and Imagination in the Temple of Knowledge” at the convocation ceremony of the Kwara State University, he  has said that the situation was especially worrying due to the fact that no one could say what had become of the girls.

South Africa: Gauteng school admits to racially segregating pupils

An investigation has determined that a school known as  Curro Foundation School in Roodeplaat, near Pretoria, South Africa, did segregate its Grade R pupils according to race after it was pressurised by white parents, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Thursday.

"In January this year we received complaints with regard to allegations of racial segregation. It was alleged that some classes were made up of only black students  and white students were grouped together separately," he said in a statement.

Nigeria: University of Lagos's best Student scores 4.96 CGPA

Prof. Rahamon Bello,the  Vice-Chancellor of the  University of  Lagos,(UNILAG),  on Friday said that  125 of  its  10,600 graduating students for the 2014 session had finished in the First Class Division.

He said at the convocation media briefing in Lagos that the event for the award of degrees, higher degrees, Diploma, certificates and prizes, would hold from April 27 to April 30.

Nigeria: 2,000 pupils study in 2 classrooms in Bauchi

Alhaji Mohammad Baba the  head of Guru Village,has that over 2,000 primary school pupils study in two classrooms in the village near Bauchi, Bauchi State.

Baba disclosed this during interview with NAN in Bauchi on Tuesday.According to him, the leadership of the village has been making efforts to ensure that more classes are erected to ensure atmosphere conducive for the school children.

Nigeria: Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka slammed the presidency and Olusegun Obasanjo’s book

 Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, who spoke yesterday in Lagos at the public presentation of a book titled “Modern and Tradition Elite in the Politics of Lagos” written by Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole dismissed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s book, “My Watch”, as “three tonnes of doctored and self serving narratives”, concluding that, “a little learning is a dangerous thing.”

According to Professor Soyinka, what the current political actors have done is to take Nigeria to “hitherto imaginable low in the art of public persuasion which  we have a right to imagine forms the foundation of political life.”
